Sony Xperia S Is Next In Line To Get Ice Cream Sandwich Treatment

Sure it’s been a while since Ice Cream Sandwich has been out, but at least more and more devices are (finally) being updated to the latest Android 4.0.4 software. Sony announced through its blog that its Xperia S smartphone is next in line to get the software makeover. It will gradually roll out the software starting today and promises to bring a host of goodies for Xperia S owners. On the ICS side, users will be treated to items such as an improved lock screen (which includes Facial unlock) and resizable widgets. On the Sony software side— users will be treated to things like the WALKMAN app, which blends Sony’s audio technology with social intergration (think Facebook or Twitter) and the Movies app— which allows users of the device to have the ability to take advantage of the phone’s screen and hardware to stream movies in high quality audio/video.
The update is pretty hefty— coming in at around 200MB or so. But hey, the end result will make everything worth it… believe us. Keep in mind if you’re on a carrier-branded version of the Xperia S, you may need to wait a while before you see that long-awaited upgrade notification on your phone.

Dutch Court Rules in Favor of Samsung in 3G Patent Case Against Apple

A District Court in the Hague, Holland, has ruled that some of Apple’s older iPads (iPad 1 and iPad 2) and iPhones (3G, 3Gs, and 4) violate one of the Korean firm’s 3G patents. Today’s ruling regards European Patent EP1188269, which protects “Apparatus for encoding a transport format combination indicator for a communications system.” Also, for winning this case it seems as if Apple may have to ante up some cash towards Samsung’s way as compensation. Is this sweet justice? Honestly, it probably doesn’t matter. This is just pocket change for Apple and even with this loss, I can guarantee that it will not make Apple stop themselves from doing this again in the near future. I know us Android fans are getting tired of Apple constantly trying to stop both Samsung and HTC from continuing their Android success, but if you haven’t gotten used to it by now, you might as well start to. I don’t see this changing anytime soon.

Download The Official Google I/O 2012 App

Google I/O 2012, held at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, is just a week away and Google has just released this year’s official conference app in the Play Store. This year’s app is looking pretty nice with a visual overhaul, Google+ integration, personal schedule with reminders, and the ability to stream conference video directly. What other features does the app include? Here’s the list from the Play Store:
View the conference agenda and edit your personal schedule
View detailed session, code lab, and speaker information, including speaker bios, photos, and Google+ profiles
+1 sessions right from the app
Participate in public #io2012 conversations on Google+
Guide yourself using the conference map
Get a reminder a few minutes before sessions in your schedule are due to start
View information about companies in the Developer Sandbox
Keep up with announcements from the I/O team during the conference
View your schedule on your Android 3.0+ device’s home screen using an app widget
Play back “I/O Live” session video streams on your Android 3.0+ devices
Automatically sync sessions in your schedule to your Android 4.0 device’s calendar
Beam session details from your Android 4.0, NFC-enabled device to another using Android Beam
The app works great on both phones and tablets running Android 2.2 and higher. Though the app will be more useful for those of us attending the conference (this is my first year… yay!), anyone with an interest in Android, Google, and all their technologies will definitely get something out of it. In other words, if you’re reading this, you should get the app.

ISeeYou App Keeps Your Screen On While Looking at it, Similar to the GSIII’s Smart Stay

Have any of you found yourself jealous that your fancy Android device is lacking the Galaxy S III’s ability to keep the screen on while looking at it? I mean, how annoying is it when you are reading a webpage and your device’s screen times-out and you have to power it back up and unlock it to just keep reading from where you left off? The Galaxy S III combats this annoyance by using Samsung’s new Smart Stay feature that prevents your device from going to sleep by using the front facing camera to detect an onlooking face. When Sammy first announced the device and its nifty features, I figured it would be the custom ROM development community who would port the feature over to be used in various ROMs. Looks like I was wrong. Now everyone can get in on the action by simply grabbing the ISeeYou app from the Google Play store.
ISeeYou comes in two different flavors. A free version and a paid version. The only difference besides $.99? The paid version allows you to change the scan interval and how long the camera will search for your face, the free version does not allow any changes. I opted for the paid version only because I wanted to change how often my Nexus scanned for my face in hopes to preserve precious battery life. You see, out of the box the free app will attempt to detect your face every 20 seconds which can be a bit overkill if you have your screen timeout set to 60 seconds like in my case. I have the ISeeYou app set to scan every 55 seconds for 5 seconds for those times when I am reading something that may require the screen to stay on for longer than a minute. For those times when I am only looking at the screen for 30 seconds or so, I wont be wasting battery by having the front facing camera power-up every 20 seconds scanning for my mug. You see where I am going here? I guess if battery life isn’t concern of yours then the free version will do the trick just as well, but for those of you who are like me and try to squeeze every amp hour out of your device, then I would suggest going for the paid. Either way, start with the free version to make sure the app is compatible with your device because I only tested it on one phone and only for about 20 minutes. That being said, while testing with the ISeeYou app activated, my phone never shut itself down while looking at it even though I never had any touch interaction. Pretty sweet if you ask me!
The jury is still out on whether or not the use of this app will cause any unwanted side affects like accessive battery drain or wake locks. I assume there is going to be some toll on battery life but I am hoping the benifit outweighs the possible lack of juice. Either way, this app will keep me happy until I get my GSIII in the mail and now I don’t need to feel like those folks with the international GSIII are enjoying features I can’t.
Check out the app for yourself through one of the links below and let us know what you think!

Android Tablets Now Own Nearly Half the Tablet Market

The Online Publishers Association (OPA) has just released a study of tablet users that has a number of surprises in it.  The survey, which included 2,540 internet users between 8 and 64 years of age, found that Android tablets have made huge gains in the last 12 months, rising from 32% market share in 2011 to 51% in 2012.  The iPad accounted for 52% (the numbers don’t add up to 100% because some people had more than one type), so they are now essentially neck and neck.  The Kindle Fire can take credit for a lot of the gains, but just as we’ve seen with phones, consumers like choices once they understand the differences between them.
More after the break…
Within the Android-owning part of the survey group, this is how it broke down: Kindle Fire (28%), Samsung Galaxy (13%), Other (10%), B&N Nook (9%), and HP Touchpad (8%).  Also interesting is that customer satisfaction rates were almost equal between iOS and Android, at 95% and 90% respectively.  Female users also gained some ground as 51% of tablet users are now women compared to 44% last year.  There’s a bunch more jammed in the report so hit the source below to see it all.

Ice Cream Sandwich Build (6.16.211) for DROID RAZR Leaks

Two days ago we reported that Verizon was sending out texts to the DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX owners that an update to Ice Cream Sandwich was looming and just around the corner. And today, an ICS build running on the RAZR has leaked with the build number of 6.16.211. Reports state that this is the latest and newest build Motorola has built for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, thus this could very well be the final build that will be sent out to the public. The Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX are two fine pieces of hardware and the upgrade to ICS will only make it even better. Any RAZR and RAZR MAXX users out there excited about this?

Sprint HTC Evo 4G LTE Users Currently Locked Out Of Google Wallet

For the past few weeks, users of the new HTC Evo 4G LTE on Sprint have been unable to get Google Wallet working. It would hang at the “adding prepaid card” dialog and eventually timeout with a message to try again later. This was verified to be an Evo LTE issue only since modifying the device’s build.prop file to identify it as a Galaxy Nexus would fix the issue.
Lately, however, Wallet changed its behavior and began displaying an error message that seemed more ominous, telling users “Google Wallet has not yet been certified in your country or on your device / carrier.” The app is then basically dead in the water.
There are currently two rumors as to why this is happening. The first is that Google is working on a fix and this new error message is simply a stop-gap measure until the fix is ready. After all, it’s better to tell the user the app won’t work than to just hang and let the user wonder what’s going on. The second rumor is that Sprint is blocking Google Wallet since they plan to launch their own NFC payment solution called Touch. We’re hoping it’s rumor #1 and NOT rumor #2. I don’t like the idea of different payment systems for different carriers.

There is a lot of discussion about this topic going on over at XDA. Hit the source links below to check them out.

Samsung announces the Galaxy S III as the first SAFE for Enterprise phone in the U.S.

It’s one thing to sell the most Android phones to consumers, but Samsung wants to make sure they are the Top Dog in Enterprise as well. We heard about SAFE earlier in the year. It stands for Samsung Approved For Enterprise and the Galaxy S III will be the first Samsung phone in the U.S. to get the SAFE designation. With the Galaxy S III and SAFE, you get support for 338 IT Policies, which includes on-device AES-256 bit encryption, enhanced support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, and support for Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions. As BYOD (bring your own device) is adopted more throughout the Enterprise community, phones such as these make things a lot easier for IT departments.
To me the presser below implies that there will be separate models with the SAFE branding, but it’s not the case. All Galaxy S III’s will have the SAFE capabilities and that means you can buy it from any of the five major carriers (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular). To further entice sales, Samsung is offering a Trade-In Program called SAFE2SWITCH to make it easier for users to make the switch to what is now the most popular Android phone in the world.
Full press release after the break:
Samsung Makes Android SAFE™ for Enterprises, Offers Trade-In Program to Upgrade to the Galaxy S III
Samsung is the First to Launch a Quality Assured, Enterprise-Compliant Android Smartphone
DALLAS — June 18, 2012 — With the AndroidTM operating system projected to be the No. 1 platform for enterprise smartphones by 2013[1], Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC (Samsung Mobile) is simplifying enterprise adoption with the introduction of SAFE (Samsung Approved for Enterprise) and the first SAFE-branded smartphone in the United States, the Galaxy S® III, which will be available at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and US Cellular by July. To aid prosumers and corporations in accessing the most innovative smartphone on the market, Samsung is also introducing SAFE2SWITCH, a trade-up program that offers competitive pricing for qualifying smartphones for both individuals and enterprise customers.
SAFE – Optimized for the Enterprise
SAFE provides a comprehensive approach to making Android devices secure and manageable by systematically meeting the rapidly evolving needs of IT and the growing number of businesses allowing employees to “bring your own device” (BYOD) to work. Samsung created SAFE as a way to defragment the Android OS across multiple versions from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich at U.S. carriers. Out of the box, the SAFE-branded Galaxy S III supports a full suite of enterprise-ready features and capabilities with support for 338 IT Policies.[2] This includes on-device AES-256 bit encryption, enhanced support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and support for industry-leading Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions.
Over the last 12 months, Samsung has surpassed its next nearest handset and smartphone competitors to become No. 1 globally[3] and now has its sights set on the enterprise. Working closely with enterprise customers and industry-leading solutions providers, Samsung developed a thorough quality assurance program. This program begins with MDM and VPN solutions providers using Samsung’s software development kit to deeply integrate their solution on the SAFE device. Once the development effort is completed, Samsung and the solution provider then thoroughly test and verify the device’s support for the MDM and/or VPN software. This collaboration, coupled with the testing process, creates solutions that are optimized for SAFE devices and enterprise use including adoption within regulated industries such as healthcare, financial services and government.

New Virtual Assistant Robin Looks To Put New Spin On Driving

We may have seen our fair share of Siri clones out here in the Android world, but there’s one that’s looking to put all other virtual assistants to shame called Robin. This virtual assistant is aimed specifically for use when driving and allows drivers to use voice in/out and hand gestures in order to establish communication with the device. Robin comes jam-packed with the abilities and features such as give navigation, real-time traffic and parking information, gas prices, weather and more. When you’re sitting in rush hour or just plain bored during your drive, Robin can narrate personal Twitter news and even tell a joke or two.
The app is currently in beta, but it’s certainly looking like it’s on the right track for impressing users. Hit the break to see the full presser from the developers as well as grab the QR code and Play Store links.

“Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) June 16, 2012
Robin is designed with drivers in mind, aiming to provide them with relevant information, guidance and content via a natural voice / gesture interface. In the car, this interface becomes key, enabling a completely eyes-free interaction: voice in, voice out. Importantly, Robin’s powerful dialogue engine allows a natural and smooth conversation flow, always keeping track of the implied context. Starting a dialogue is as easy as “waving hello” in front of the phone’s screen, so one never has to look away from the road (video).
At the moment, Robin is available in beta across the US, offering features such as local search (including Yelp reviews), navigation, real-time traffic and parking information, gas prices, weather and more. And for those getting bored behind the wheel, Robin can narrate personal Twitter news (with more content reportedly coming soon) and even tell jokes.
According to Magnifis, the company behind Robin, these are just the first steps. Drawing inspiration from the famous KITT of the “Knight Rider” fame, Robin is poised to emerge as a very personal kind of assistant that becomes increasingly helpful as she gets to know her “master” better. For instance, Robin will be able to proactively alert drivers about traffic or speed cameras, based on her knowledge of one’s schedule and driving patterns. And the two-way communication will make it easy for the drivers to share information, e.g., about traffic (Waze style). She will also serve as “personalized radio”, narrating relevant news aggregated from a variety of sources and even learn the individual’s taste in jokes.
“Today, people still think of a car assistant primarily in terms of navigation,” says Magnifis co-founder/CEO Ilya Eckstein. “But in fact, we don’t use navigation much, as most of the time we know our way around. What we really need in the car is someone to watch out for us as we go and be there when we need… well, just about anything. That, and being able to remain fully connected and empowered behind the wheel. To not miss out on a single important bit of life, even when you are not staring at the screen. And that is exactly what Robin is meant to help us with.”

Pre-Order Sony’s New Google TV Set-Top Box For $199

One of the major reasons the Logitech Revue Google TV set-top box didn’t catch on is that it launched for $299, a price point that was hard to swallow for a first-gen device. Logitech bailed and put it on $99 clearance (which is when I got one).
Sony is learning from Logitech’s mistakes and is launching its new NSZ-GS7 Google TV set-top box at $199, a more reasonable price point, especially for a device running the latest version of Google TV. It also comes with a QWERTY keyboard remote with a track pad/button combo on the flip side. Looks like a very nice package, and now you can pre-order one from J&R. No word on when it will ship, but the page does state it’s “coming soon”.
Tempted? Hit the source link to pre-order.

MIUI Home Launcher Now Available in the Play Store

If you are the type of person who likes the look of iOS but prefers the benefits of an Android device, I am sure would you like the MIUI interface. Some of you are probably already familiar with the MIUI experience and have rooted your phone to get it. For the rest of you who aren’t into tinkering or don’t have the time, Xiaomi has ported their MIUI theme for Android as an installable apk and can be found in the Play Store right now. The MiHome app will provide the basic MIUI navigation and will even install a new lockscreen, but don’t expect the full fledged experience as you would if you flashed the actual MIUI firmware. Versions are available for Android 2.3 and 4.0 and can be found through the links below.

Samsung Patent Highlights New Stylus Pen Accessory Complete With Integrated Headset

It was only a matter of time before we saw the evolution of Samsung’s impressive lineup of accessories. While it’s no stranger to having stylus pens on its products, it recently filed a patent application that turns a stylus pen into a bonafide headset accessory. This patent would cover a pen meant for capacative screens like those found in the Galaxy Note, while incorporating a wireless headset into its body as well (presumably of the Bluetooth standard).
Hmmm if we didn’t know any better, we’d say that Samsung is at the very least considering following in the footsteps of ASUS— which recently teased consumers with a similar accessory of its own. But in the meantime, let’s just wait and see if Sammy will actually follow-up this newly filed patent with a new accessory for owners of its devices to be excited for.

Developers Get A Voice In The Play Store

Google is finally giving developers a way to respond to app reviews in the Play Store. This is a great addition since it gives developers a way to defend their apps against unfair reviews, and for improving customer/dev interaction and communication. Developers with a Top Developer Badge have access to this feature now, but other devs are going to have to wait a bit before it becomes available to them.
We love seeing Google add more features like this that help out Android developers. Keeping devs happy keeps them making apps, and we all know that a healthy software ecosystem is the key to the success of a platform.
